How to Upload WordPress Themes
Follow these step-by-step instructions to learn how to use the File Manager in your cPanel to upload a new WordPress theme for your web site.
Important note: Your theme may come with its own installation instructions — ones that may be different than the standard ones here. Go ahead and unzip the theme folder on your hard drive and see if there is a README in there with further instructions.
How to Upload a Theme With the cPanel File Manager
- Go to http://put-your-domain-name-here.com/cpanel
- Log in with the username and password from your welcome email
- Click on File Manager. It’s a yellow folder icon in the “Files” Section. If you can’t find it, type File Manager into the Find box in the top left
- A pop up will ask you which directory you want to open. It should have Web Root selected already. If not, select it. Press Go.
- The files for your wordpress installation are listed in the main pane on the right. Double click on the line labelled “wp-content”. If you click too slow, it will be only checked.
- You should see three folders: plugins, themes, uploads. Double-click on themes
- You will see the existing themes listed
- Find the upload button near the top of the screen. Click on it.
- It will ask you to choose a file. Choose the theme’s zip file that you downloaded from the theme site. Note: if you have already un-zipped it, you need to re-zip it up or download it again.
- Wait for the upload to finish.
- Close the upload tab/window
- You may need to navigate back to the themes directory. Try refreshing the browser
- You will see the zip file in the themes directory
- Click once on the checkbox near the zip file to make sure it is checked
- On the toolbar near the top of the page, click the extract button
- It will ask you if you want to extract the theme to the themes directory, it should already be filled in. If it ends in themes, you need to fill in the folder name, type in the name of the theme (without any spaces or dots, do not put the .zip at the end) Click the extract file button.
- You may need to press the reload button above the file list to see the theme’s folder
- Your theme will now be available in the wordpress admin area. Go to http://put-your-site-name-here.com/wp-admin and log in. Click on “Appearance”
- after you have confirmed the theme is working, you can log in later to the cpanel / file manager to delete the old theme’s zip file to save space. Do not delete theĎ€ folder for the theme.

How to Upload New Images or Replace Images in Your Theme
- Double click on your theme folder to view the files in the folder
- Double click on the images folder to view the files in the images folder
- Click once on an image file to select it
- Click on the view button on the tooolbar near the top of the page to view details for the image
- You will see some info like “GIF image data, version 89a, 300×250” This means the image is 300 pixels wide by 250 pixels tall.
- If you want to replace that image with something you made in Photoshop or any other graphics program, you can use the upload button in the file manager. Make sure to name the file the same name. Make sure the image is in the same format (.gif, .jpg, or .png) and make sure the new image is the same exact size.
